new insights into the relationships among alcohol consumption, hepatocellular carcinoma and hepatitis c virus infection

چکیده
context viral hepatitis and the consumption of alcohol are recognized as important reasons for the development of liver disease throughout the world. it would also seem that chronic alcoholism causes more severe and rapid progression of liver disease in patients with chronic hepatitis c, leading to more frequent liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. evidence acquisition the data for this article were obtained through an initial medline search and from the references of relevant articles, and used to provide updated information on the relationship between alcohol consumption and the hepatitis c virus. results excessive alcohol consumption among patients with chronic hepatitis c is likely to result in more severe hepatic injuries, promote pathologic progression to cirrhosis, and increase the risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma. although the exact mechanisms involved in the progression of chronic hepatitis c in alcoholic patients have not been definitely established, possible alcohol-induced enhancement of viral replication, iron overload, immunologic suppression, the role of nf-kappa b, and the signaling pathways involved in its activation, have been suggested. significant correlations have been reported between hepatitis c virus rna levels and the amount of alcohol consumed by an individual. interferon therapy is less effective for alcohol patients, than non-alcoholic patients, even after a period of abstinence. the obtained data suggest that a hepatitis c virus infection is an important cofactor in the pathogenesis of liver disease among patients with an alcohol problem. conclusions in light of a possible synergistic effect between alcohol and hepatitis c virus replication, total abstention ought to be recommended, and due to alcohol's inhibitory effect on interferon therapy, patients with alcohol problems should not be treated until they stop drinking.

The Absence of Hepatitis C Virus Infection Among Patients with Hepatitis B virus in Mashhad, Iran
Background and Aims: Many studies have provided evidence for the role of hepatitis B and C viruses in the development of liver cancer. Although the routine treatment is available for both conditions, no definite guideline is available to treat patients dually infected with HBV and HCV. This study was performed to determine the frequency of HBV/HCV-coinfection in Mashhad, North-East of Iran. Mat...

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is one of the major causes of advanced liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) worldwide. While the knowledge about the molecular virology of HCV infection has markedly advanced, the molecular mechanisms of disease progression leading to fibrosis, cirrhosis and HCC are still unclear. Accumulating experimental and clinical studies indicate that HCV may ...

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of primary liver cancer, and the second most common cause of cancer deaths worldwide. The top three causes of HCC are hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and alcoholic liver disease. Owing to recent advances in direct-acting antiviral agents, HCV can now be eradicated in almost all patients. HBV infection and alcoholic liver d...

Hepatocellular carcinoma in woodchuck were characterized for woodchuck hepatitis virus integration nea c-myc oncogene. In one tumor, viral integration resulted in overexpression of a c-myc viral cotranscript. In a second tumor, viral insertion, 600 bp upstream of c-myc exon 1, was associated with increased levels of normal c-myc mRNA. These results demonstrate that integration of woodchuck hepa...

Hepatitis C infection is characterised by three key features, which are the consequence of a complex interaction between genetic determinants of immune and other host factors and viral characteristics: 1. A high rate of viral persistence after acute infection resulting from a combination of weak T cell responsiveness and specific viral mechanisms of immune escape. 2. Marked interindividual vari...

It was thought that HCV infection was very frequent among alcoholics; some even though that this disease affected nearly 35% of this group. Now there seems to be a consensus among the main investigator groups that the correlation of hepatitis C and alcohol increases the risk of complications, cirrhosis and liver cancer included. Moreover, it's now certain that among patients with HCV infection,...
